POSITION: Employment & Training Coordinator

Summary:
The Employment & Training Coordinator is responsible for providing information about
employment and training to SLFN clients, helping to identify employment goals and assisting
with career planning. They will be knowledgeable about current labour market trends,
education and training programs and funding options. The Employment and Training
Coordinator also liaises with businesses, contractors and organizations to promote skilled
members for employment opportunities
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Interview clients to obtain employment history, educational background and career goals;
complete skills assessments and evaluations with clients to determine the interests,
aptitudes and abilities of clients to develop an action plan
• Support action plan development to include a realistic employment or training goal and
steps to achieve it; on-going support in the implementation of their action plan
• Assist clients with resume writing, job searching and interview preparation; conduct pre
interview counseling sessions
• Provide instruction regarding current job searching best practices, resources and
technology; research and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current job searching
methods
• Create detailed job search plans for clients, providing support and guidance
• Identify suitable employment opportunities for clients based on the skills assessment,
evaluations and career goals of the client
• Work with potential employers to develop placement opportunities; coordinate with the
designated Human Resource personnel to support client advancement in the workplace
• Liaise with employers to provide for an effective client transition into employment and
working environments
• Assess the need for training assistance according to the Employment & Training Policy
and ASETS agreement guidelines
• Assist in the assessment of identifying training opportunities and to obtain sponsorship
through various available funding resources if the client does not meet training assistance
requirements
• Collect labour market information for clients regarding job opportunities, entry and skill
requirements and other occupational information; provide information on the labour market
dynamics and needs in the region
• Provide industry specific information to assist clients with understanding potential
opportunities
• Liaise with business, industry, agencies and other organizations in providing community
based career planning resource
• Ensure that clients are active participants in all phases of the job placement process
• Maintain accurate client files and data collection, input of monthly reporting statistics
• Provide monthly progress reports as requested
• Provide information as it becomes available to update the Swan Lake First Nation website
with employment and training opportunities, job seekers and employers
• Prepare and implement strategic and operational plans
• Develop reports and proposals as required
• Perform other duties as required
Required knowledge Skills and Abilities:
• Knowledge of theory, principles and practices of career transition and training and
development
• Knowledge and experience in education, professional training and/or career
counseling/planning
• Knowledge of and experience in working with aboriginal communities; an in-depth
understanding of Aboriginal culture, tradition and history
• Ability to work well with individuals from varying backgrounds
• Familiarity with available community and educational resources in service delivery area
• Knowledge of the local economy and understanding of labour market trends in the region
• Knowledge and proficiency with client management programs such as Contact 4 and/or
ARMS
• Knowledge and experience in updating/maintaining online platforms
• High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis and/or reasoning to identify underlying
principles, reasons or facts
• Knowledge and experience in budget preparation and monitoring
• Ability to prepare thorough proposals and reports
• Knowledge and experience in utilizing a case management model ie: individualized
assessment of needs, service planning, monitoring and follow-up
• Innovation and creativity to design successful programs and initiatives
• Ability to successfully manage multiple projects, programs and priorities
• Ability to overcome challenges and flexibility to adapt quickly to change
• A strong sense of diplomacy, negotiation and counseling skills
• Ability to deliver presentations, workshops and training sessions

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
• Grade 12 or equivalent
• Experience of minimum 2 years with demonstrated proficiency in office structure and
organization
• Knowledge of First Nation funding deliverables and reporting methods

• Valid Class 5 Drivers License
