POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Manager supports the General Manager in the daily operations of the SLFN Petro-Canada location. The Assistant Manager provides leadership to supervisors and frontline staff while helping ensure the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of the business. This position is responsible for assisting with staff supervision, scheduling, customer service, cash handling controls, inventory management, merchandising, health and safety compliance, and operational administration.

The Assistant Manager acts as the Manager’s designate during periods of absence and works collaboratively with staff, vendors, contractors, and management to maintain high operational standards and exceptional customer service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operations Management

  • Assist with the daily operation of the Petro-Canada location.
  • Ensure store opening and closing procedures are completed properly.
  • Monitor fuel pumps, POS systems, lottery terminals, ATM services, and other operational equipment.
  • Ensure fuel pricing, pump signage, and promotional signage are accurate and updated.
  • Coordinate maintenance requests and communicate deficiencies to the General Manager.
  • Assist with contractor coordination and follow-up on maintenance and repair work.
  • Ensure the interior and exterior of the facility are maintained to a high standard.

 

Staff Leadership and Supervision

  • Provide day-to-day supervision and support to supervisors and frontline staff.
  • Assist with employee scheduling and shift coverage.
  • Support employee onboarding, orientation, and training.
  • Monitor staff performance and adherence to company policies and procedures
  • Provide coaching and guidance to employees to promote professional growth and development.
  • Assist with documenting employee concerns and reporting performance issues to the General Manager.
  • Support recruitment activities, interviews, and staff retention initiatives when required.

Cash Handling and Financial Controls

  • Review daily cash-outs and shift reports for accuracy.
  • Verify safe drops, cash deposits, and petty cash balances.
  • Assist with investigating cash discrepancies and reporting findings.
  • Ensure proper cash handling procedures are followed by all staff.
  • Support accurate completion of daily sales documentation and operational reporting.
  • Assist with bank deposits and change orders as required.

Inventory and Merchandising

  • Monitor inventory levels and notify management of shortages or ordering requirements.
  • Assist with receiving, verifying, and organizing merchandise deliveries.
  • Monitor product rotation and expiry dates.
  • Maintain merchandising displays and promotional materials in accordance with Petro-Canada standards.
  • Assist with inventory counts, audits, and stock control procedures.
  • Support efforts to maximize sales and minimize inventory losses.

Customer Service

  • Deliver exceptional customer service and promote a positive customer experience.
  • Address customer concerns, complaints, and inquiries professionally and promptly.
  • Assist with implementing promotional programs and community engagement initiatives.
  • Foster positive relationships with customers, suppliers, vendors, and contractors.

Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety legislation, Petro-Canada standards, and SLFN policies.
  • Assist with incident reporting, hazard identification, and corrective actions.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness activities and safety training.
  • Ensure Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and safety documentation remain current and accessible.
  • Support environmental compliance related to fuel operations and spill prevention procedures.

Administrative Duties

  • Monitor operational emails and assist with responding to routine inquiries.
  • Maintain accurate records, filing systems, and operational documentation.
  • Assist with staff training records, uniform inventory, and workplace supplies.
  • Prepare reports and information requested by the General Manager.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and operational planning activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferred two (2) years of supervisory experience in retail, convenience store, fuel retail, or related operations.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills.
  • Experience handling cash, preparing deposits, and maintaining financial controls.
  • Strong customer service and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with POS systems is considered an asset.
  • Experience within a fuel retail environment is considered an asset.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work: days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call when required.

  • Exposure to varying weather conditions when working outdoors.
  • Interaction with customers, staff, suppliers, and contractors on a regular basis.

The Assistant Manager will perform other related duties as assigned and may assume the responsibilities of the General Manager during periods of absence.
